If this is your situation
- Need cash immediately: compare the complete repayment amount before speed.
- Not sure you can repay: stop and explore a payment arrangement or qualified debt advice first.
- Already managing a payday loan: avoid treating another application as an automatic solution.
Questions to ask the credit union
- Do I need to become a member, and is there a membership share or account fee?
- What is the annual rate, any origination fee, and the total repayment amount?
- When would the first payment be due, and can I repay early?
- How long does approval and funding normally take for my situation?
Compare the payment, not just the label
Small loans can have lower rates than payday products, but a longer loan can still be a commitment. Put the payment dates beside your income dates. If an instalment would cause you to miss rent or utilities, a lower rate does not fix the budget problem.
The FCAC lists a loan or line of credit from a financial institution among the options people may consider before a payday loan. It also advises comparing cost and repayment before borrowing.
A realistic example
Dev needed $500 for a winter tire replacement. His local credit union could not fund the same afternoon, but it offered a small loan with scheduled payments. The garage agreed to hold the vehicle for a day. Waiting was inconvenient; the repayment plan was still easier to absorb than a full payday-loan repayment on the next cheque.
Alternatives to consider first
| Option | Potential speed | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Payment arrangement | Same day to a few days | Due date, late fee, and written confirmation |
| Line of credit or small financial-institution loan | Varies | Rate, fees, payment amount, and total repayment |
| Payday loan | Often same day | Full fee, due date, and next-pay cash flow |
Read the payday-loan cost guide, use the repayment calculator, and review alternatives before you continue.
What should you do next?
- Proceed carefully only if you have the terms in writing and a realistic plan to repay without missing essentials.
- Pause if the payment would cause another shortfall next pay cycle.
- Get help from the relevant provincial consumer office or a qualified non-profit credit counsellor if you do not understand the agreement or collection notice.
Approval is not guaranteed. Terms, fees, and availability vary by provider and province. Always review the full agreement before accepting an offer.
