If this is your situation
- Need cash immediately: compare the complete repayment amount before speed.
- Not sure you can repay: stop and explore a payment arrangement or qualified debt advice first.
- Already managing a payday loan: avoid treating another application as an automatic solution.
If a lender offers more time
- Ask whether the original payday-loan agreement is being extended, replaced, or paid off with another product.
- Request the total amount due, every fee, the new due date, and the consequences of missing it—in writing.
- If the next due date still falls before you can afford rent, food, and transportation, more time may not solve the problem.
What a rollover means
A rollover generally means moving an unpaid payday-loan balance into another payday loan or extending it for an additional charge. Ontario, for example, prohibits extending the original agreement and prohibits a new payday loan from the same lender while an earlier payday-loan balance remains outstanding. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says that in most provinces a lender cannot extend or roll over a payday loan by moving the due date and adding a new fee.
That does not mean every repayment problem disappears. Default interest, collection activity, or a different credit product may be proposed. Read the paperwork slowly.
A simple pressure test
| Question | If the answer is no |
|---|---|
| Can you repay the full amount and still cover essentials? | Pause and contact the lender or a non-profit credit counsellor before accepting anything new. |
| Do you know every charge and the new due date? | Do not consent until it is written down. |
| Is this your second high-cost loan this month? | Treat it as a warning sign, not a routine fix. |
A realistic example
Mei borrowed $300 for a car repair and then saw that the full $342 repayment would leave her short on groceries. A second fee looked smaller than the original problem, but it would not create new income. She asked the repair shop about a payment arrangement and called a credit counsellor instead. That was slower. It was also more honest about the gap.
Alternatives to consider first
| Option | Potential speed | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Payment arrangement | Same day to a few days | Due date, late fee, and written confirmation |
| Line of credit or small financial-institution loan | Varies | Rate, fees, payment amount, and total repayment |
| Payday loan | Often same day | Full fee, due date, and next-pay cash flow |
Read the payday-loan cost guide, use the repayment calculator, and review alternatives before you continue.
What should you do next?
- Proceed carefully only if you have the terms in writing and a realistic plan to repay without missing essentials.
- Pause if the payment would cause another shortfall next pay cycle.
- Get help from the relevant provincial consumer office or a qualified non-profit credit counsellor if you do not understand the agreement or collection notice.
Approval is not guaranteed. Terms, fees, and availability vary by provider and province. Always review the full agreement before accepting an offer.
